Tool Introduction
This fills your screen with solid black, in a window or fullscreen, so you can look at the display itself instead of whatever is normally on it. On an LCD or LED monitor, a dark room and a black screen are the standard way to check for backlight bleed and IPS glow around the edges. On OLED and AMOLED screens, it shows you the real black level, since those pixels turn off instead of just dimming. It also works as a plain, distraction-free background, or a dark backdrop to check a screen for dust or stuck pixels.
How to Use the Black Screen

- Move your mouse or press any key if you need the controls back
- Look at the screen straight on, then from a slight angle, to check for glow or bleed

What does a black screen show that a normal desktop does not?
On an LCD or LED monitor, a full black screen reveals backlight bleed (light leaking around the edges) and IPS glow (a soft haze near the corners at an angle). On an OLED screen, it shows you how deep the black actually goes, since OLED pixels can turn off individually.
What is backlight bleed and is it normal?
Backlight bleed is light escaping from behind the LCD panel, usually visible as bright patches or streaks near the edges or corners on a black screen in a dark room. A small amount is common on LCD monitors and is not usually a defect. Bright, uneven patches across a large area may be worth raising with the manufacturer.
How do I check backlight bleed properly?
Dim the room, go fullscreen with black, and look at the screen from a normal viewing distance and then from an angle. Bright spots or glowing edges that stay in the same place regardless of what is on screen point to backlight bleed rather than reflections from your room.
Does this save power on my screen?
On an OLED display, showing black uses noticeably less power than showing white or bright colors, since each pixel is lit individually and a black pixel is simply off. On an LCD or LED monitor, the backlight usually stays on, so the power savings are much smaller.
Can a black screen help me spot dust or find stuck pixels?
Yes. Dust and fingerprints on a screen catch the light and show up against solid black, especially in bright room lighting. A stuck pixel, which is a pixel stuck showing a color instead of turning off, also stands out clearly against black.
Can I use this as a plain black background?
