What is Wingdings?

Wingdings is a symbol font Microsoft made in 1990 from the Lucida Icons, Arrows and Stars designs by Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes. It has shipped with Windows since version 3.1. Each key draws a picture instead of a letter: hands, zodiac signs, envelopes, crosses and stars. For years the symbols only existed inside the font. Unicode 7.0 added most of them in 2014, and today every symbol on a keyboard key has its own character. This translator uses those characters, which is why the result copies and pastes as text.

Gaster and Wingdings in Undertale

In Undertale, the hidden character W. D. Gaster speaks in Wingdings, and players have been decoding his lines ever since. Paste one into the Wingdings box to read it, or write your own message in English and copy it out as Gaster would say it.

Why some symbols show as boxes

A symbol only shows if the device has a font that draws it. Common ones like ✌ or ✈ appear almost everywhere, but some Wingdings characters, such as the hand and pennant symbols, are missing from older systems. This page loads a symbol font, so everything shows here. Where you paste it, the reader's device decides. When it has to look right, save it as an image.

The "NYC" story

Days after Windows 3.1 came out in 1992, people noticed that NYC in Wingdings shows a skull and crossbones, a Star of David and a thumbs up, and some read it as a hidden message. Microsoft denied that, saying the order of the symbols was largely random. In its later Webdings font, NYC was arranged on purpose to show an eye, a heart and a city skyline: I love New York.

FAQs

How do I translate Wingdings to English?

Paste the symbols into either box. The translator sees that the text is Wingdings and shows the English letters next to it. It also reads the lookalike symbols that some other translators use.

Can I copy and paste Wingdings into Discord, Instagram or a text message?

Yes. The symbols are ordinary Unicode characters, so they paste anywhere text goes. A few of them are missing from older phones and computers, which then show an empty box. If that matters, use "Image" to save the message as a picture.

Why are uppercase and lowercase letters different symbols?

Wingdings gives every key its own picture, so A is a victory hand and a is a zodiac sign. Turn on "Uppercase only" to use the hand and sign symbols for every letter.

Do I need the Wingdings font installed?

No. Since Unicode 7.0 in 2014, every Wingdings symbol on a keyboard key has its own Unicode character, and this page loads a free symbol font to display them, so the translator works on phones and on computers without the font.

What language does Gaster speak in Undertale?

W. D. Gaster, the hidden character in Undertale, speaks in Wingdings. Paste his lines into the Wingdings box to read them in English.

Is this Wingdings translator free?

Yes, with no account and no limit. The translation happens in your browser, so your text is not sent anywhere.
