Tool Introduction
This random team generator splits a list of names into fair, randomly shuffled teams. Paste your names one per line, choose whether you want to set the number of teams or the number of people per team, and it deals everyone out so team sizes never differ by more than one person. Add your own team names, or let it default to "Team 1," "Team 2," and so on. It is built for the moment right before a game, a class activity, or a work session starts, when you need groups fast and want them to feel fair.
How to Use the Random Team Generator
- Paste your names into the box, one name per line
- Choose "Number of teams" if you know how many teams you want, or "People per team" if you want a set group size
- Enter the number of teams or people per team
- Optionally turn on custom team names and list your own, one per line
- Press "Create Teams" to see each team as a card with its members listed
- Not happy with the split? Press "Re-shuffle" for a new random split, or "Copy all" to grab the result as text
Use Cases: Splitting a Class, a Standup, or a Game Night
- Split a classroom into project groups without accusations of favoritism in the pairing
- Divide a standup or workshop into breakout groups quickly and fairly
- Set up teams for trivia night, a sports league, or an office game tournament
- Randomize pairs or small groups for a team-building exercise at work
- Assign players to sides for charades, Pictionary, or any other team-based party game
More Game Night Tools
Once your teams are set, keep the game going with the Charades Generator or the Pictionary Word Generator. Add extra rounds with the Random Animal Generator, Random Country Generator, or Random Object Generator. To pick who goes first once teams are set, try the Name Wheel or List Randomizer.
FAQs
Is the Random Team Generator free to use?
Yes, it is completely free and runs in your browser, with no sign-up or app to install.
How does it keep teams balanced?
It shuffles your full list of names and deals them out one at a time across the teams, so team sizes never differ by more than one person. If you have 13 names split into 4 teams, you get teams of 4, 3, 3, and 3, not one team of 7.
Can I choose the number of teams instead of the team size?
Yes, switch between "Number of teams" (you set how many teams, sizes are calculated for you) and "People per team" (you set the target size, and the number of teams is calculated so everyone fits).
Can I name the teams myself?
Yes, turn on "Use custom team names" and enter your own names, one per line, such as "Red Team" and "Blue Team." Any team without a matching custom name falls back to "Team 1," "Team 2," and so on.
What if I do not like the split, can I redo it?
Yes, press "Re-shuffle" to shuffle the same list of names into new teams without retyping anything. Team sizes stay balanced each time.
Can I copy the team list to share it?
Yes, use "Copy all" to copy every team and its members as plain text, ready to paste into a message, a document, or a printout.
