Choose a Capture Mode

Active Window, Full Screen or Selected Region. Which one you pick decides what ends up in every screenshot.

The Three Modes

You pick a mode in the capture window before you click Start. It applies to every screenshot in that session, and you can start a new session with a different one.

  • Active Window: Captures whichever window you are working in, and follows you when you switch apps or monitors. Nothing else on your desktop gets in.
  • Full Screen: Captures the entire screen, including anything else you have open.
  • Selected Region: Captures only an area you draw, on the monitor where you started. The area stays put for the whole session.

Which One to Pick

Active Window, unless you have a reason. It is the only mode that follows you when you move between apps mid-process.

Reasons to pick something else:

  • The story is in two windows at once: A dialog on top of the window it belongs to, or a terminal beside a browser. Active Window will only give you the front one, so use Full Screen.
  • You want a fixed slice of the screen: Just the sidebar, or just the form, in every step. Selected Region crops once instead of forty times.
  • The app is fullscreen anyway: Either works. Active Window still saves you the menu bar.
Note: Full Screen captures everything on that screen, including whatever is behind the window you are documenting. Check your desktop before you start, or blur it out in the editor afterwards.

Drawing a Region

Pick Selected Region and click Start. The screen dims and you drag a rectangle over the part you want. Folge shows its size while you drag, and you can nudge the edges from the handles before you begin.

Tip: Leave some marginDraw the region slightly wider than the thing you are documenting. Menus and tooltips open past the edge of the control they belong to, and a region drawn exactly to the edge clips them.

Clicks Outside the Region

Clicks outside the region do not capture, which lets you use the rest of your screen without adding steps you will have to delete. If you need the opposite, turn on Capture outside clicks in Settings.

Changing Your Mind

The mode is fixed for the session, so if you picked wrong, click Finish, delete the steps you do not want, and capture again into the same guide. New steps go on the end and you can drag them into place.

What this is good for

  • Keep the rest of your desktop out of the guide.
  • Capture something that spans two windows at once.
  • Crop once at capture time instead of on forty screenshots afterwards.

Make guides like this one

Folge captures a screenshot on every click, so a guide writes itself as you work.
